The Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) strives to hire trustworthy, dedicated staff and retain their employment for 20 to 30 years of professional service. While this employment strategy contrasts with the five-years-of-service trends in private industry, in corrections the employer and the employee greatly benefit from a long career history. Recently, the VADOC has struggled to hire and retain professional corrections employees. This challenge is widespread across the Department and has been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic. There are many advantages to being a VADOC corrections employee. Applicants, regardless of higher education levels, previous professional experience or prior law enforcement training, are trained to become excellent security and non-security employees, opening additional opportunities for career advancement and promotion. VADOC offers its employees competitive benefits packages, including health benefits, financial savings plans, and retirement packages. Employment in the corrections field is truly a professional career.
